I never owned a Commodore 64 computer myself, but damn I was jealous of the friends who got one. Later my parents bought me an Amstrad CPC 464, on which I learned my first computer skills.

But it seems I now have a second chance to be the proud owner of a Commodore 64, since a new company called Commodore USA has decided to release a modern computer with a lot of “old-school” charm. I hope it will a) be available in Germany an b) low-cost, so that I can get one!

New Commodore computer

Isn’t that a sweet little machine? You can get more details on the company’s website.

When Apple opened the iPhone for 3rd party developers and introduced the AppStore the iPhone stopped being a good mobile phone and became a great one. With the right apps your iPhone can be much more than a simple smartphone with a touchscreen. Here are my 5 most favorite apps:

Tweetie 2
Tweetie was my favorite iPhone Twitter client until Tweetie 2 came out.
What makes Tweetie 2 stand out from all the other Twitter clients is it’s great UI and the ease of use. It even has some powerful features like autocomplete of Twitter usernames, reply-to-all and threaded direct messages that I am missing in most desktop Twitter clients.

Alas Tweetie 2 isn’t free but sets you back €2.39 which is pretty reasonable considering the long list of features.
For more information check out the official website or get it on the

Trillian for iPhone
When you have been following this blog you probably already know that I love Trillian. The new Trillian Astra not only looks great but also comes with all the features you want from an multi-protocol messenger. Trillian for iPhone now brings all the Trillian goodness to your favorite mobile phone.

Trillian for iPhone synchronizes with your Trillian Astra account, has support for push notifications and saves your chat sessions server-side, so you never miss a message. Trillian for iPhone costs €3.99 and is available on the AppStore. For more details check out the official announcement on the developer’s blog.

Eucalyptus
Of course there are a lot of ebooks and ebook readers on the AppStore, but Eucalyptus is a true gem. It is the only ebook reader I know that feels like a book or better like a whole library at your fingertips. Eucalyptus combines the access to over 20,000 books (from the Project Gutenberg library) with a very good-looking and accessible user interface.

Alas this comes at a hefty price. The app sets you back €7.99 which is quite a lot compared to the free Stanza application. But in my opinion Eucalyptus is worth every penny. You probably won’t find a better ebook reader app for the iPhone. You can get more details on the

or the official site.

Dicenomicon
When you also follow my other blog Stargazer’s World, you probably already know that I am an avid roleplaying games fan. And what is the most important tool any roleplayer needs aside from a pencil and paper? Dice! Dicenomicon is my favorite dice-rolling application for the iPhone so far. It doesn’t look as pretty as some of its competitors but it has a lot of cool features. It not only features the standard dice like the d4, d6, d8 etc. but also allows you to roll Fudge dice or lets you set up more complicated dice combinations like “roll 4D6 and add up the highest three”.

The Dicenomicon sets you back €3.99 on AppStore. For more information check the official site and the review I’ve written for my other blog.

Wikipanion
Wikipanion is one of the apps that lets you access the Wikipedia from your iPhone. Of course, you can always use the Safari browser to go to Wikipedia directly but Wikipanion makes reading and searching for Wikipedia articles much easier. Especially when you want to access the world’s largest encyclopedia while on the commute or when you don’t have access to a PC, Wikipanion is a live saver. And the best of all: it’s free. There’s a Wikipanion Plus that costs a few bucks, but for most users (including me) the free version is more than sufficient.

You can get more details on Wikipanion on its official site and get it for free from the AppStore.

My desktop is usually a mess, covered with a ridiculous amount of desktop icons from shortcuts to folders and various files I downloaded from the net. Finally I found a solution to clean up this mess: Fences.

This handy desktop enhancement by Stardock creates several icon groups called “fences” on the desktop, that automatically sort and organize your desktop icons. All program shortcuts go into the “Programs” fence for example and all folders into the “Folders” fence. There are a couple of pre-included layouts that help to speed up setting up Fences. You can of course add, remove and customize your own fences.

The best thing is: Fences is totally free and runs on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Both 32bit and 64bit versions are supported. You can download Fences here.

But now Motorola surprised me with the Motorola Cliq.

On the first glance it looks much like an iPhone. But in addition to a 3.1” touchscreen it has a full QUERTY keyboard that neatly slides under the screen, when you don’t need it.

It comes with a 5-megapixel camera, GPS and all other features you expect from a modern smartphone. I am not sure if this phone could convince me to replace my iPhone 3G, but it’s actually looking great.

One of the most interesting features is Motoblur. This software syncs personal and work contacts, connects to social networks and shows all relevant information on the phone’s home screen. Motoblur comes with out-of-the-box support for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.

It also comes with a MicroSD slot that supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB. The internal memory of 2GB is a bit small in my opinion, but that’s only a minor drawback since you can use MicroSD cards. All in all it looks like an interesting alternative to an Apple iPhone.

Alas they had to remove the BASIC interpreter to get approval, but the developer hopes to reintegrate it at a later date.

The app comes with the following games: Dragons Den, Le Mans, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck und Jack Attack.

If you love one of these games and if you can live without the BASIC interpreter, you can get the C64 Emulator here.

More details on the C64 app are available at http://c64iphone.com!

Update: The app has been removed from App Store again. Obviously the BASIC interpreter was still part of the app which left to another ban after Apple found out about this! Bummer!

Last week, my up to that point favorite Twitter client Tweetdeck started to act strange, so I decided to give some alternatives a try. I searched the internet for reviews and stumbled upon DestroyTwitter. It may sound a bit strange, but it’s definitely one of the better Twitter clients out there. Like a lot of other Twitter clients it’s using Adobe AIR and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.

So, what makes DT different?

Low memory usage: approx. 48.000K, TweetDeck uses 82.000K for example

Highly customizable: you can not only change the colors by using themes, you can also choose between a compact and wide UI. The latter shows Home, Replies and Messages at once.

It’s fast: ok, this is highly subjective, since I haven’t made any benchmark tests, but it seems to response faster than the other clients I tried

Built-in search: DT has a built in Search tab that allows you to search on Twitter without accessing the browser

Aside from all that, DT just looks and works great. If you are looking for another Twitter client, you should check DestroyTwitter a try.

Huh? A what? Gravatar? You all probably know what an avatar is, a small image appearing beside your name when you do such things as posting in a forum, commenting a blog post et cetera. Some years ago someone had an awesome idea: why not create a service where you upload your favorite avatar once and when you post anywhere on the web, this avatar is used. Usually you had to upload your avatar to every single site you used, which could be quite a hassle, if you were member of several forums or commented to a lot of blog posts.

Back when it was released, only a few sites had Gravatar support, but today most forums and blogs fully support Gravatars. That means that if you use the email adress there that is tied to your Gravatar account, your gravatar is used!

Some time ago, the people from Automattic (those are the nice guys that brought us WordPress.com) bought Gravatar and have even improved the service since then. So why not give it a try?

Here’s a video with a quick overview of Gravatar:

This morning I stumbled upon a blog post on the Nokia blog that unveiled the upcoming Nokia Booklet 3G, a Windows-based netbook powered by an Intel Atom processor, that promises a 12h battery life. Wow, that’s impressive, if true.

As it’s a device by Nokia it has WiFi and 3G/HSPA support and hot-swappable SIM card functionality. It also has assisted GPS on board. All in all the Nokia Booklet 3G looks pretty cool for a netbook and has all the features you can dream of, but I am pretty sure this will have its price. I don’t think that this new netbook will be available for anything less than what a full-sized notebook costs at the moment.

It would be nice if the mobile network companies would consider bundling a subsidized Nokia Booklet 3G with a affordable 3G data plan.

If you want to have a closer look at Nokia netbook, check out this video:

What do you think about this bold move by Nokia? Do we really need another brand of netbooks? And do you believe Nokia can compete with the more established netbook manufacturers?
